Eastport December Sing-A-Long

Get ready to sing and enjoy some holiday fun with the community. Events began on Friday, November 26th at 2 p.m. with the annual decorating of the community tree at the Eastport Shell Station on the corner of 6th Street and Severn Avenue. This event was scheduled earlier than in past years, and on a day when children would be home from school, to encourage families to attend. "We hope that more and more young people will find it exciting and important to be a part of these festivities," says Agnes Abernathy, who has organized the Sing-Along for more than 10 years.
The Sing-Along will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, December 15 at the Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Eastport. From 6 to 6:30, carolers will take to the streets to serenade the local neighborhood, then return to the church for more songs and celebration. This year, the Sing-Along features a new finale: bring your copy of Handel's Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah and sing along with the Mt. Zion Chancel Choir and the Eastport Brass Ensemble. Refreshments will follow at 8 p.m. in the fellowship hall downstairs, where, it is rumored, Santa himself will make an appearance.
"This is an event for the young and the young-at-heart," says Abernathy. "This has been such an exciting venture because it is always evolving, and each year, you can feel the excitement growing." Alderman Josh Cohen is on the Sing-Along Committee this year and hopes to bring in as many new faces as possible to make this the biggest year ever for the event.
